Insights into the toolbox of government

Peter Altmaier is the former Federal Minister of the Economy and former Head of the Federal Chancellery and has held many other posts in ministries and in parliament. During a public discussion, Altmaier gave a detailed presentation about the toolbox of practical politics and discussed a number of questions based on his long experience, among them: How do you form coalitions? How do you negotiate successfully? What are the benefits of the departmental principle on government organization? How can the Chancellor’s Office steer policy?

He offered some interesting suggestions for future discussion
– Extend legislative terms to five years,
– Introduce a binding fact (and financing) check for election manifestos, and
– Set time limits for government formation.
